Seeking validation is a normal human behavior – whether we realize we are doing it or not. This can be especially true for physicians, who are often natural people pleasers. However, if you are considering a career or life change, itās important not to let the need for validation from others hold you back from doing whatās best for you. In todayās solo episode (my 100th podcast!), I’m discussing all things validation, including the different types of validation and how to process your own need for validation.
In this episode weāre talking about:
- Why we feel the need for validation
- One of my listeners who found validation through this podcast
- The special role of validation from our parents
- How to listen and trust your feelings without judgment
- The difference between external and internal validation
- Using lived experience as a form of validation
- My personal experience finding validation in my career change

Hi Heather – congratulations on reaching #100! I really enjoyed this episode. It was a revelation when I discovered that there were other people who felt the same way I did – I liked being a physician, some days I loved it, but I never had the passion that I thought I “should” have for my work. I felt guilty for feeling like I was being pulled in different directions. This kind of validation is SO helpful and necessary!
Take care,
Sue
Hi Sue! Thank you so very much for the congrats and for sharing this lovely comment! I am really happy you liked this episode – I enjoyed doing it! You are absolutely right, validation is so helpful and necessary. And as you experienced, it can take a while for us to find that there are others who feel like we do. As physicians, we tend to keep a stiff upper lip! I’m glad you were able to do what you needed to do with your career and life and let go of the guilt. Congratulations to YOU.
