When you REALLY want something, what will you do to make it happen?
This morning in the locker room of Gold’s gym, I met two bleary-eyed women who had camped out all night at the nearby shopping complex. It wasn’t a big sale at Macy’s they were waiting for, but a chance to be on The Amazing Race reality show!
In this Emmy award winning TV show, a dozen teams of two people are chosen from thousands of hopefuls to participate in an adventure scavenger hunt around the world. The winning team walks away with a huge cash prize and the experience of a lifetime.
The two campers I met informed me that this afternoon there were going to be auditions for The Amazing Race and I should go and watch.
And so I did.
The mini auditions could have been their own reality show.
Each pair came up to the stage to be videotaped and had one minute to tell about themselves, their relationship to each other, and why they, above everyone else, should be chosen. No pressure!
Once I saw the first audition, I was hooked and spent the afternoon baking in the sun as team after team came up on stage to give it their all.
Here is a sampling of the contestants:
- A man, whose wife, friends and co-workers had all declined to be his teammate, had convinced his flamboyant hairdresser to be his partner.
- A brother and sister. who had grown up on welfare and spoke of dumpster diving in their childhood, were ready to see better days by winning this competition.
- The wife and the ex-wife of the same man.
- Two medical school roommates wagered they were well prepared for the sleep deprivation that ultimately unravels most of the teams.
- A team of breast cancer survivors with matching signature pink outfits.
- A dynamic couple who broke into song, with the man holding his partner in his arms for the length of their duet in 2-part harmony.
- And then there were the Samoan Brothers…..
These brothers came dressed (or undressed?) in their traditional outfits – loincloths, grass ankle skirts and well-oiled chests. They did a choreographed dance in perfect sync and sang out their plea to be chosen in voices that shook the trees. And yes, they had come all the way from Samoa.
They got my vote.
If there’s something you REALLY want, what are you willing to do to achieve it? If it’s not dancing in a loincloth and grass skirt, what would it be? What dream is big enough would you risk total embarrassment for?
